But God had other plans for Saul. We cannot understand Paul’s theology apart from his encounter with the risen Christ on the road to Damascus where, by his own account, he was “taken hold” by Jesus Christ (Phil. 3:12).

At his conversion Paul saw a light and heard Christ’s voice, but he also saw the Lord (Acts 9:17; 22:14). Paul recalls this event in his letters: “Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? ” (1 Cor. 9:1); “and last of all he appeared to me also” (1 Cor. 15:8; cf. Gal. 1:15 – 16). Paul was struck blind and led by the hand into Damascus (Acts 22:11). The powerful Saul was now helpless. His whole life had become radically reoriented.
